People are often concerned by the penalties associated with Freemasonry. These are purely symbolic, not physical, and aim to raise awareness of value of the knowledge being inculcated. Masonry requires discretion and discipline and the oaths form part of the mechanism designed to reinforce the individual's responsibility for his own actions.
Oaths and obligations are taken on the Volume of the Sacred Law which represents the force of the individual's own conscience and beliefs.
During the initiation ceremony, the candidate solemnly swears to strive to lead a life according to Masonic ideals, to keep the tenets and precepts of Freemasonry and the laws of the Land. This promise is made to a Great Architect of the Universe and is not in any way incompatible with moral, civil or religious duties.
