There is a display of masonic philately, primarily first day covers, one of which commemorates the 75th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill's initiation into freemasonry. This is franked 24th May 1976.

Framed: a M. M. diploma belonging to François Gerard Dumesnil, dated 26.2.1779, Lodge Constance, Bayeux No. 1779. One signatory is "Guillotin", of significance in French history. The former M.P.G.C. Arnold Banks 33º. found this item in an old bookshop in Paris.

This item has now been removed and is exhibited at our Paris Headquarters.

Framed: pale blue-ribboned Craft apron and 9 Masonic jewels from Wyley Lodge No. 3836, founded in 1917 in Coventry. The house pictured on the one of the jewels is the Charter House, home of Col. and Mrs. Wyley, from the Tudor period, with a secret stair and room behind the fireplace in the dining room.

Framed: a display of 23 Masonic jewels, including a Past Master's jewel from Lodge Hermes No. 20, which may be a founder's jewel although it is not inscribed as such. Undoubtedly it was intended to mark a special occasion.

Left of mirror

A pottery bottle described "Alexander Stuart, Builder, Peterhead". Bottles specially made with Masonic symbols were common from the mid-19th century to just before World War I. They were probably used at the festive board, but could also be bought by non-masons. The name is undoubtedly that of the customer for whom it was made.

Framed: 18 Masonic jewels. The early H.R.A. jewel (the larger one) was presented by R.W. Bro. W. Adair-Roberts 18º. The two jewels from Lodge Human Duty belonged to Ethel M. Whyte and Herbet Whyte, both dated 15.1.1912. The provenance of other items in this display case is not known. The jewel displayed to the right here is that of Taquah Mark Lodge No. 614. It's symbology is unusual for masonic items - an elephant and a palm tree - and refer to Taquah (or Tarkwa) in Ghana, a well established gold-mining community. The jewel is dated 1910. The elephant and palm tree reflect the importance of these items in the local economy and social infrastructure.
